I am so thrilled that I have a block in the most recent issue of Quiltmaker's 100 Blocks, Vol 7, due out May 7th. It's the 7th time they have published a magazine with 100 blocks by 100 designers.
They really have found a successful format for a magazine and I am so happy to be part of it.
My block is on page 60. It's called "Beach Cabanas".
Here's a close-up of the trim on the cabanas made using ric rac and very small buttons.
With the cold, yucky weather that we have been having, I have been thinking about the beaches on the southern shore of Long Island. I grew up about 15 minutes from the beach. A lot of the clubs had these cabanas where you could change and leave your clothes.
My family never had one because we rarely went to the beach. But when I went to the beach with my friends, the cabanas were like little cozy hiding places. I remember hanging out on the beach, eating sandwiches with sand in them (yes, a bad memory) and drinking lots of liquids out of cups with those paper straws. I no longer live on Long Island, but memories are in the forefont because Hurricane Sandy destroyed lots of those beaches.
I thought it would be fun to create some blocks to compliment the cabanas
to make a quilt called "Fun At The Beach".
How about some blocks with starfish?
with some sequin embellishments for the spines?
I also made a block with cold drinks:
Then through the magic of the computer and Microscoft Word, I created my quilt.
If you would like to make this quilt , use the pattern for the beach cabanas in Vol 7 of the 100 Blocks magazine. You can use my patterns for the fusible appliques. The drink cups and the starfish can be copied(by right clicking on the image) and pasted into a Word document, using the images below.
The starfish should measure 3 /12" high.
If you copy it into a Word document, you can adjust the size.

The cup with straw measures 6" high. Remember when creating the different sections of the applique, to leave a bit of fabric underneath for overlapping.
I created everything in 12 1/2" wide sections.

I grew up on LI also in Levittow. My fave childhood memory in the Summer was actually the trips to a market way out on the island. I think the name wad Gouz (rhymes with cows). They had farm animals and great chocolate milk.

ReplyDeleteI visited Copenhagen, Denmark, with my school band when I was a kid. We went to the zoo, saw all the sites, and of course visited Tivoli (a traditional fun fair). I just loved it.
My parents would take us to Lake Mead in Nevada for summertime! We had a blast!

Our dad would take my sister and me to Fair Haven Beach on Lake Ontario. Aah...a sandy beach and fun in the water. Cheryl, you've brought back childhood memories buried somewhere in this brain that is in need of de-fragging like my computer because there are toooo many files in it. LOL
ReplyDeleteWe didn't travel much when I was a kid, but did sometimes go to Lake Erie to swim and enjoy the beach. And my grandparents had a place on the Allegheny river where we would go canoeing and water skiing.

ReplyDeleteOur family didn't travel much, but I did spend 2 weeks every summer at my grannies, I wouldn't trade those times spent with her for nothing. She lived on 50 acres, with a pond and tons of animals. Every year we would pick blackberries for a cobbler, churn our butter, and ice cream. And we can't forget the games of Yahtzee! Grannie played like she was in Las Vegas! Come on big sixes! The sixes are hot tonight!....LOL Thanks for a trip down memory lane!

ReplyDeleteBest summer vacation was the year my Mom, grandmother and I went to Hawaii. Still a memorable trip and one I want to take my kids on first chance I get!
When I was a kid, my family always went camping and I would enjoy the pools or the lakes depending on where we camped. As we got older, we started going to the beach and staying in motels and now that I'm retired, my husband and I love going to Daytona Beach. I'm not really an ocean swimmer but do love walking on the beach and watching the ocean. Thanks for a chance to win.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was growing up in Minnesota, our family had a cabin on a lake in Wisconsin and we would go there every weekend in the summer. It had a nice sandy beach, clean water to swim, and we also had a canoe and pontoon boat. Those were nice, relaxing weekends just laying on the beach and swimming.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, we lived at the beach in California and rarely went away on a vacation. One year my father decided to take us on a camping trip to Yosemite National Park. For me, sleeping near a stream in the mountains with the smell of pine trees was like a new awakening. Luckily I married a man who loved camping and fishing and now, almost 60 years after that first camping experience, we still camp nine months a year -- only now age forces us into an RV.

Our summer trips were going to Northern Michigan --- so, while there were beaches, they were on lakes rather than the ocean. I have many wonderful memories of those times.

Traveling was not big for my summers, I usually had cousins come and stay with us for a few weeks and really looked forward to that.

ReplyDeleteAs a child I spent all my holidays at Mundesley on the Norfolk coast, my great aunt Rosina had a small holding there and I could not wait to visit.
ReplyDeleteMy parents took us up to a place on Bob's Lake north of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, many times. We 3 kids got to bring a friend and we took our dogs. Swimming and fishing and eating Mom's wonderful meals cooked on a wood stove. It was roughing it but these were the best times.

As a kid who moved alot, I never realized that people actually lived on the beach. But one year my folks rented a beach house for a week, and I was amazed at how a city was built upon the sand. So I made a sand beach house.

As a child we owned a house in Avalon, New Jersey. However, real estate values there went so sky high that my parents sold it to be free of the upkeep. They didn't have cabanas there, but it makes me think of the old Gidget TV show and other TV and movies about beachgoers in the 50s and 60s that I've seen. Very cute! Thanks for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a child and lived in New Jersey, I would go to either Girl Scout Camp or Jewish camp in the Poconos. That is how I learned to swim and loved sitting around the campfire at night. At Jewish Y camp, every Friday evening we would were white shirts and get together with the boys camp for Friday evening special dinner. My younger brother (of blessed memory) was at the boys camp so every Friday evening, I would get to see him. We lived in small tents and enjoyed hiking in the woods and swimming in the lake. I also spent my rest time reading "Gone With the Wind" which was required for my 9th grade class that fall. Wow, going down memory lane when life was free of worries:

My family never really went on a "real" vacation but we would go visit relatives! I have wonderful memories of those visits and wouldn't trade them for all the other "real" vacations in the world! My Aunt had a huge four poster bed with quilts on it and you literally had to climb up the side of the bed to get into it! I said then that I would one day have one of those big tall beds and guess what? I have one, complete with the quilts on top!!

ReplyDeleteThat quilt block brings back memories of Pampano Beach, FL. We always went there because my grandparents lived near by. We didn't have as fancy cabanas, but half circle ones! It was so much fun, especially in the winter since it was so cold back in Virginia!

ReplyDeleteMy dad was a military man and we were in Panama for a short period of time when I was young and we went to the beach alot while there. I remember cold fried chicken, and bologna sandwiches (and they probably had sand in them too,LOL) I love the beach and like to go when I have a chance.

ReplyDeleteWe used to go to my grandfather's camp in East Montpelier Vermont. He lived near the Winooski River Dam. We swam everyday in that freezing spring fed river no matter what the weather was.

ReplyDeleteWe had a cabin in Youbou on Lake Cowichan that we went to when I was a kid. My father passed away when I was only 8 and he didn't have any paper work done for the property so we lost it. Too bad, I remember it being a lot of fun.

We lived in Huntington Beach, CA, so enjoyed lots of time at the beach all year round. When we vacationed in summer we went to an inn in Northern California, surrounded by redwoods and mountains, where we fished and explored the woods.

ReplyDeleteGreat reminder of summer fun! Every summer we spent 2 weeks at a cottage on Lake Champlain in northern New York. Went fishing almost every day with my father and spent a lot of time reading.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we didn't get to go any place in the summer. I grew up on a dairy farm. Also, my mother and father were each only children, so we had to be home to take care of the farm. Of course, summer included gardening to have food then and for the winter; putting up hay for the animals; and making school clothes. Mom was a school teacher so when she wasn't doing extra duty cooking for hay hands, she was making clothes for my two brothers, me, and, of course, herself for school. Mom always had big projects such as refinishing a hardwood floor. So, I have fond memories of summer. They were busy, busy, busy. My mom's parents lived "in town" and gardened with us. We were blessed to have our grandparents close to us and involved in our lives.

ReplyDeleteWe would sometimes go to Surfside just outside of Freeport, TX. My aunt and uncle had a beach house there. I love your block. I'm thinking of making a house quilt with lots of different buildings. Your cabana block would be a great addition.
ReplyDeleteWe used to go up into the Tonto National Forest, near Payson, AZ, when I was kid. It was always wonderful to get out away from the city, and wander in the hills, looking at interesting plants, insects and animals, and collecting different sorts of rocks, and occasionally even fossils! :-)

ReplyDeleteWhen I was young, my father built a cabin on a piece of land that was in the middle of the Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois. We would go there each summer. Since there were no roads to it, we would park at a nearby farm and walk to the cabin carrying all our food supplies. It was quite a hike down a steep hillside, across Lusk Creek, down a dry Brady Branch, along a very old field, and up a hillside. All cooking was done over a campfire, and water was carried from a spring that was an 1/8th mile from the cabin. The rocks for the foundation of the one room cabin and for the fireplace were gathered from the hillside. The lumber for the cabin was brought down on a wagon pulled by mules. The shingles for the roof my father made himself from a tree (or trees?) that he cut down on site. I have lots of good memories of that cabin, but hunters broke in when I was in college and burned down the cabin (and part of the national forest). The farmer where we always parked our car actually talked with the hunters, and they told him they had permission to use the cabin. But they didn't. Anyway I do have my memories and lots of pictures. ReplyDeleteWe used to go to Jamestown NY (where Lucille Ball was born) to visit my grandpa. Our cousins other grandparents lived right next door, so it was very convenient. While we were there, we would go to Chatauqua Lake, rent a cabin, and go swimming...

When I was a child we visited the lakes that were close by us in northern Saskatchewan. I could not resist the water, so even though my Mother had told me to stay out of the water, unless an adult was with me, I had to get my toes wet. Then my ankles... knees... yup pretty soon I was IN the water. It was always worth it, even when I was scolded. :)
ReplyDeleteOur family did long driving vacations mostly in the west, but we also often spent a week at our grandparents in a small town southwest of Fort Worth, and attended Vacation Bible School, sat on the porch, caught fireflies, etc.

A trip up to northern Michigan to see the newly built Mackinaw Bridge is something I won't forget as little girl.

ReplyDeleteI live in Southeastern Massachusetts, so the Cape was a big favorite, but there is also a state park nearby that has fresh water swimming. We used to have cookouts there. Your block is so much fun. It's super.
ReplyDeleteFun block and even better quilt. A wonderful summer theme quilt. My favorite places to go as a kid were the beaches in Connecticut. We had lots of aunts and uncles there so that is where we would go. I had such a great time.

ReplyDeleteWhat a cute quilt. Thanks for sharing the additional blocks. My family used to go to the Adirondack Mountains for summer vacation, staying in a cottage at Blue Mountain Lake. It was and still is pretty much my idea of heaven.

We had the ocean around us and lots of cove beaches to enjoy and explore.

ReplyDeleteThe best place I visited when younger was actually a summer that I spent living with my older sister and her husband in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Being at the beach when you're 16 is always great, but the best part really was spending 3 months with my sister. We're 11 years apart, but that summer made us feel really close and we became best friends after that summer. Thanks so much for a great giveaway!

ReplyDeleteI live in Indiana. Lake Michigan has some nice beaches with beautiful sunsets. Just wish I could enjoy them more often, but health challenges limit me.
ReplyDeleteSince we lived in Wisconsin, we of course went to the Wisconsin Dells. We road a boat on the river and went to an Indian pow wow.

ReplyDeleteWe had a backyard pool and spent most of the summer splashing in our backyard. We did take an annual trip to a (probably cheesy, tho it seemed fabulous when I was 5) place called Santa's Village.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a kid, my father would organize a neighborhood caravan to Galveston. Each family packed a big picnic and when we arrived, the moms laid it all out together for the families to share. We would fish, crab, swim and play in the sand. When we returned home, my father would make a huge gumbo from seafood we caught or he bought directly from the boats on our trip. DEEEEElicious! Thanks for the chance to win!

ReplyDeleteWe never took vacations when I was a kid but I sure did like hanging out at the city pool! Now my favorite vacations are in the Caribbean so I really love your quilt block! I want to get the book so I can make one like it!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid we would visit Rockaway Beach. It was a gross NYC beach but that's what was available to us only a subway ride away. My aunt was crazy and she would take about 8 kids with her on the subway with packed lunches and everything else we needed. It was an adventure!
ReplyDeleteback in the day, we would pack up everything for a week's fishing [pop and my bro fished] across the penninsula [a far trek back in the forties] where i spent the days with the local kids exploring the hillside, the creek beside it and the inlet's beaches. such fun, such friends!
ReplyDeleteI grew up on the ocean in Nova Scotia and we had wonderful beaches. In the late 50's and early 60's, we spent a few weeks each summer at Old Orchard Beach, as well as in Atlantic City with our NJ family, which was always a great time.
ReplyDeleteWe would always go 'up north' for two weeks in the summer. It would always include a trip to Itasca State Park to walk across the Mississippi River Headwaters. But living in Kansas for over 30 years now, I haven't made the trip in a long time. Even tho we go to MN every year, my kids have only been to the park once.
ReplyDeleteWe would go to the county fair every summer. Stay up too late, play in the dirt while we waited for the parents to talk to people, stand in line forever, eat too much junk, look at the entries and go in the smelly barns.
ReplyDeleteHi!!! Very pretty block and I love the row style quilt!!! We went to a lake and campground area when I was young!!! It did have a sandy beach and we could swim!!!! No cabanas...I think they look relaxing and can imagine a cool breeze blowing through!!!! Thanks for the fun!!!!

ReplyDeleteMy favorite summer time designation was to my Mom's family reunion. She was the youngest of 14 children and I have over 40 first cousins. What fun - the day would be full of laughter and good food.
ReplyDeleteCamp Dearborn in MI, every Sunday during the summer with ALL the cousins and their families. We'd cook breakfast there on the campfires and not leave till it was dark. Dad would have to carry me into the house, even if I was fake sleeping! Best memories as a kid.

ReplyDeleteWe couldn't afford to vacation when I was a child. Our grandparents owned a working cattle ranch, however, and my three siblings and I literally lived there the entire summer break from school. And we loved every minute of it!

ReplyDeleteWhen I was young we used to go to the seaside on daytrips in the summer as we lived quite near the coast in the south of England. I used to love seeing the rows of beach huts just like these. They often had names on them like Sea View, or Windy Ridge.

ReplyDeletewe didn't get to go on many vacations while I was growing up, so I will always remember the one we did take. we went to Yellowstone Park. that was the year of the big fire there, in the late 80's. it was a lot of fun, stopping and short walks to geysers, seeing moose and elk. when we were at Old Faithful, we could see and smell smoke on the horizon....and when we got home, we saw the news and found the fire had swept though that area the day after we left Old Faithful. wow.
ReplyDeleteWe lived in Iowa not far from the Mississippi River. Dad was a tried and true fisherman and we rented a cabin along the river. Let me tell you, the road along the bluff that took us to the cabin area was just a bit better than a goat path!! If we met anyone coming or going, it was a horrowing situation - for me - a nervous Nelly!!

ReplyDeleteAs a kid I went to the beach on Lake Michigan occasionally. More often we went to a cottage my grandparents owned on a lake nearby. Swimming there was not as enjoyable because of the mucky bottom, weeds, and sometimes leeches.
ReplyDeleteWe had a very rustic cabin in the mountains near our home. We'd stay for a week at a time. I loved the hiking, swimming in the lakes, playing in the river. It was idyllic. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in eastern Colorado and didn't travel out of the state until the summer between 5th and 6th grade. My best friend's dad was a truck driver, and she occasionally got to go with him on overnight runs to Iowa. That summer she invited me to go with so I could see the Missouri River. What a lark!
ReplyDeleteWe didn't go travelling much, but I do remember one trip to Vancouver Island. We got to play on the beach and collected shells & sand dollars. Wish we lived closer to a beach... Love your sample quilt! :)

ReplyDeleteI grew up in Naples, Florida and spent many many hours on the beach there, but I went for a train trip with my Uncle Moose when I was 12 years old. We stayed with Uncle Art and Aunt Mary in Sea Girt, New Jersey. Their house was located in the first block from the shore. There was a library that was just around the corner from their house. I liked to go there because it used to be the city's light house. Thanks for the chance to win.

ReplyDeleteEach summer we would stay in a rustic cabin on a local springs of a fed lake -- there might be 2 or 3 families with 10 kids bunking together. All day would be spent swimming until we turned blue. Thanks for the chance.

ReplyDeleteI remember visiting my great aunt in Coldwater Michigan. She owned a little gas station with a small general store. My sister and I loved going there because she always let us pick out some candy after dinner. We also used to sleep on her davenport in her screened in porch which was really cool. ReplyDeleteWe had family friends who owned & operated a campground up in Boothbay Harbor, Maine, so 9 summers were spent up there, building & working in the campground. After hubs & I married, we went back & I was tickled to see "my" campsite, Karin's Korner, was still there, even tho the ownership had changed.

Like the beach theme. When I was a kid, we'd visit my grandparents on a lake in Nebraska. When I was 4 or 5, my grandfather convinced me to stay in shallow water by telling me there was a hole in the bottom of the lake, and I'd fall through if I went too far out. All great, except I had older siblings who would hang out in the exact area where I thought the hole was. I was so scared for them, but because my parents didn't know what Grandpa had told me, they thought I was nuts!
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, we only went to the beach once. My aunt lived near Biloxi, Mississippi, so we visited her. What fun! I am still a huge fan of ALL things beachy. Definitely reflected in my home decor, especially my master bathroom. Your quilt is so much fun, may have to put this on my short list.

I had the privilege of travelling in the summers with my family, so I have been many places. My favorite would still have to be the beach, though. I enjoy it any time of the year.

ReplyDeleteI remember going to Lake Chautauqua when we were kids. It was a one time treat; we didn't go on too many vacations. Most of the summers were spent playing outside with the neighbor kids. We'd get up, have breakfast and go outside to play. We'd only come in for meals and when it got dark!
