| Road Trip! |
There is exciting news in the quilting world. As many of you know almost all of our quilting fabric is manufactured overseas. Now, there is a company called American Made Brands, that is manufacturing cotton quilting fabric right here in the United States. They are even growing the cotton here. I am so happy to be able to help share this news.
To promote this line of solid cotton fabric and spread the news, AMB came up with the idea of celebrating America with a road trip from sate to state. They have invited one blogger from each state to make a block in the shape of a license plate that is representative of their state.
And guess who is Miss Pennsylvania?
The road trip will visit the blog representing each state in the order in which it joined the Union (for the most part) over the course of 25 days. If you know your history, you would know that Pennsylvania was the second state. (Delaware is the first state and you can see it on the sign on the highway whenever you cross the state line.)
This is a bit scary to be kicking off the tour, but here we go.

I used all American Made Brand fabric to create it. My design inspiration was all of the history that started right here - from the house where Betsy Ross made our first flag to the Liberty Bell. I shared my license plate at my quilt guild last week, and several people thought they would make a quilt using the patterns for the license plates of each state that they have visited.
Sounds very kid friendly.

I live near Philadelphia and it is definitely an eating town. There is always a battle as to who has the best cheesesteak and you can find hot pretzels everywhere, including the ubiquitous convenience store that started here, called WAWA. Tastykakes makes a big range of favorite treats that we love.
So in addition to giving away a fabric bundle from AMB that will include 8 fat quarters, I will choose a second winner to receive a box of Tastykakes and a stack of 5" squares of solids.

and make sure you leave an email address where I can contact you.

I think this is a great block to represent the wonderful state of PA... I was born and raised in Philadelphia and still have family there. The history tastykake and Philly pretzels are the things I miss the most. Thank you for sharing your block and tutorial...you did us proud!

ReplyDeleteYou license plate is so fun! Being next door in Ohio I have spent some time in PA. I have been to Philadelphia several times, Hershey (oh the smell!), Gettysburg, Carlisle, Sharon, went to college for a year in Slippery Rock, Happy Valley (skiing) and I have been to Pittsburgh a lot!

ReplyDeleteLove your block! My husband is from Irwin PA. We visit about twice a year. He just returned Saturday from his yearly Clarion River fishing trip with the guys. That's one week on the river, no running water, no electricity. I've been on this vacation twice and that was enough for me. Beautiful state!

ReplyDeletePennsylvania is a great place of history and food. The cheese steak sandwiches are non reproduce-able in other states. Great idea to use the Liberty Bell for your block.

ReplyDeleteMy paternal grandmother was born and raised in northwestern PA, and I've spent many happy hours during my childhood visiting her there (many years ago). I've already tried a sample yard of this fabric, and really like it. Thought it would be good for hand quilting and it is! This is going to be a fun road trip.

Being from Maryland I've always felt lucky to have Pennsylvania so close by. I have tons of friends in Philly and spent so much time up there when I was younger it was like a home away from home :-)

ReplyDeleteI guess I didn't realize that Pennsylvania was the second state. I grew up in western New York about 20 miles north of the Pennsylvania border. While I have visited parts of northwestern Pennsylvania, I have never been to Philadelphia. Maybe some day.....

ReplyDeleteI have been twice to PA to visit a friend in Middleburg. Of course, I love all the history of the state, but, love the Amish communities in and around where my friend is from. ReplyDeleteMy daughter went to Penn State so hubby and I spent a lot of time in your wonderful state and every time I go thru I say how much I love the rolling hills and farms and as long as UPS and the postal service will deliver, I'd live there in a heartbeat!!!
